Metroid Fusion is the best GBA game of all time, and 16 of our top 25 are already playable legally through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, which holds 29 GBA titles as of August 22, 2026. Below is the full ranked list, the best pick per genre, and every legitimate way to play each game today. If you want emulator recommendations, that lives in our separate best GBA emulators guide; this page is about the games themselves.

The 25 best GBA games ranked (August 2026)

Rankings weigh how each game plays in 2026, not nostalgia. The last column is the cheapest fully legal route, checked August 22, 2026. “NSO” means Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack on Switch or Switch 2.

How to play the best GBA games legally on each platform

On Switch or Switch 2

  1. Open the eShop and subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack ($49.99/year individual, $79.99 family, checked August 22, 2026).
  2. Search the eShop for “Game Boy Advance - Nintendo Classics” and download the free app.
  3. Open the app; all 29 games are inside, no individual purchases.

Beyond NSO, three of our top 25 have proper modern re-releases: Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp (Switch, 2023) remakes the first two Advance Wars, the Castlevania Advance Collection (2021) puts Aria of Sorrow plus Circle of the Moon and Harmony of Dissonance on Switch, PS4, Xbox and Steam, and Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town (2020) remakes the Harvest Moon entry on Switch, PC, PS4 and Xbox. WayForward’s Sigma Star Saga DX, a remaster of the 2005 GBA cult shooter-RPG, is also due on modern platforms in 2026.

On original hardware

A secondhand Game Boy Advance SP (AGS-101 model) has the best screen of the original line; loose consoles are common on eBay and at retro shops. Two cautions, checked August 22, 2026:

  • Fake cartridges are everywhere, especially Pokemon. A genuine cart has the Nintendo logo moulded into the lower plug edge and a matching board code inside; buy from sellers who show the board.
  • A GameCube with the Game Boy Player accessory puts carts on your TV, and the Analogue Pocket plays original GBA carts on a modern 615ppi screen. Analogue has raised the Pocket’s price twice on tariffs, most recently in March 2026, so check analogue.co for the current figure before budgeting.

On PC or phone via emulator

Emulator software and game files raise separate rights questions. Our best GBA emulators guide covers maintained software, official downloads and a cautious cartridge-preservation workflow. If you are using a copy you are entitled to play, the Pokemon Emerald cheat guide includes emulator-friendly formatting.

ROM-library sites distribute files that Freetins cannot verify you are entitled to use, and unofficial downloads can also carry malware or altered game data. We therefore link to licensed storefronts, official subscription catalogues and original-hardware options instead.

Rules for personal cartridge backups vary by country and can be narrower than users expect. If you preserve a cartridge, research the law that applies to you, keep the copy private and do not treat ownership of a cart as permission to download somebody else’s file.

Why is my favourite GBA game not on Switch Online?

Licensing. Nintendo controls its own catalogue, so Metroid, Zelda and Mario arrived early, but third-party rights are negotiated title by title.

  • Pokemon Emerald, FireRed and Ruby/Sapphire are not on NSO, and The Pokemon Company has announced no GBA re-releases as of August 22, 2026. Only the spin-off Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team made it.
  • Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is stuck: Square Enix’s Pixel Remasters cover the NES-to-SNES games, not the GBA ones, and the Wii U Virtual Console version died when that eShop closed in March 2023.
  • Mother 3 is on the Japanese NSO app only. A Japanese-region Nintendo account can access it, but there is still no official English version.
  • Licensed games (Astro Boy: Omega Factor, the Tony Hawk ports) are the least likely ever to return; expired character licences make re-releases uneconomical.

What to avoid in 2026

  • ROM download sites: unverified game files with copyright and malware risk. See above.
  • “GBA emulator” apps stuffed with ads on the Play Store and App Store; several are wrappers around stolen open-source cores. Stick to the vetted list in our emulator guide.
  • The Wii U and 3DS eShops: purchases ended March 27, 2023, so guides telling you to buy GBA Virtual Console games there are dead ends.
  • Suspiciously cheap Pokemon carts: a boxed “new” Emerald for pocket money is fake. Genuine loose Emerald carts sell at collector prices; if a deal looks impossible, it is.
  • eBay “multi-game” carts with hundreds of titles: these are pirate compilations and frequently have broken saving.

How this guide was reviewed

Current Switch Online availability was checked against Nintendo and a maintained catalogue. Rankings are editorial judgement, while platform availability and subscription requirements are treated as sourced facts.

FAQ: best GBA games

What is the best GBA game of all time?

Metroid Fusion. It combines the strongest level design on the system with pacing built for handheld sessions, and it is one of the easiest picks to play legally today because it is included with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack on Switch and Switch 2. The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap and Pokemon Emerald round out the top three.

How many GBA games are on Nintendo Switch Online?

29 games, as of August 22, 2026. The library includes Metroid Fusion, Metroid: Zero Mission, The Minish Cap, both Golden Sun games, both Fire Emblem releases, four Super Mario Advance titles and Mario vs. Donkey Kong, which was added in March 2026. You need the Expansion Pack tier, priced at $49.99/£34.99 per year for an individual membership.

Freetins does not link ROM libraries. Copyright rules and personal-copy exceptions vary by country, and owning a cartridge does not automatically make an unrelated download authorized. Use licensed releases or game files you are entitled to use, and seek local legal advice for a definitive answer.

Can you play Pokemon Emerald legally in 2026?

Only on an original cartridge in original hardware, in a Game Boy Player, or on an Analogue Pocket, or via a ROM you dump from your own cart. Emerald is not on Nintendo Switch Online and has no official re-release as of August 22, 2026. Watch for fakes when buying: genuine carts have Nintendo branding moulded into the connector edge.

Is the best Pokemon GBA game Emerald or FireRed?

Emerald, on content: it adds the Battle Frontier, lets you catch both Groudon and Kyogre, and has the strongest post-game on the system. FireRed/LeafGreen wins if you want Kanto and the original 151, and its cartridges are usually cheaper and easier to find genuine. Both are cart-only in 2026.

Can the Switch 2 play GBA games?

Yes. The Game Boy Advance - Nintendo Classics app runs on both Switch and Switch 2 with a Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, giving access to all 29 GBA titles with save states, button remapping and online multiplayer. The Switch 2 has no cartridge slot for physical GBA games; only the NSO app route works.

What GBA games have modern remakes?

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp on Switch remakes the first two Advance Wars games, Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town remakes Harvest Moon on Switch, PC, PS4 and Xbox, and the Castlevania Advance Collection bundles Aria of Sorrow with the other two GBA Castlevanias on all major platforms. Sigma Star Saga DX, a remaster of the 2005 cult GBA game, is due in 2026.

Yes, completely. The first-sale doctrine (and its UK/EU equivalents) makes reselling and buying secondhand games fully legal, and it is the only way to own games with no digital release, such as Pokemon Emerald, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and Drill Dozer. Buy from sellers who photograph the circuit board, because counterfeit carts are common for high-value titles.
